On the Santa Ynez...@Kevin Franck, agree with Heidi. On the Santa Ynez river it becomes apparent, especially when looking at the river from google maps/GEOlocate that it is a highly beaver modified river - with old dams that have fallen into disuse and disrepair all over the place. Rocks form the base and foundation since they are heaviest, and then branches and mud to fill in the gap. I often find myself walking on a bank or spit of land on the Santa Ynez, often times with trees growing on it, and look at it carefully and see that is part of an old beaver construction. In addition to classic beaver dams these beavers seem to be adept at constructing side channels/levees that siphon off a part of the river and use this modified section to build dams upon. Instead of trying to corral the whole flow of the river they are in a sense diverting a part of it that is more easily corralled and pooled up.Duane Nashhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14467779935085970909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057774701394069566.post-9265655261561413052014-10-23T11:43:13.920-07:002014-10-23T11:43:13.920-07:00Very interesting research and photo-documentation....Very interesting research and photo-documentation. Our beavers don't have access to rocks so they don't use them, but in the rocky streams of sonoma beaver dams ALWAYS have rocks. There is footage on the BBC of beaver using rocks, and I talked who a woman who lived on the creek in sonoma who said she could hear them at night."Plop" "PLop" "Kerplunk!". <br />heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16866235775098367327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057774701394069566.post-67147439123421741692014-10-23T04:50:25.726-07:002014-10-23T04:50:25.726-07:00Is there any kind of literature of beavers creatin...Is there any kind of literature of beavers creating rock dams out there ?
